If you’re a complete beginner and want to compose your own music, we’ll provide the foundational music theory training to help you get up to speed. This should take about an hour and is provided once you enroll.

If you’d rather focus on practicing other aspects of songwriting such as writing lyrics, you can definitely do that. We’ll provide resources throughout the class to help you, including a digital track library that you can use to write your songs without playing any musical instruments. You can also write your songs a cappella without using any background music.

If you’re a more advanced songwriter or musician, you’ll appreciate the advanced theory concepts and songwriting strategies in addition to the deeper techniques, tips, and workflows in the class.

Writing a musical is a huge undertaking, and completing one in a month-long class would not be realistic. This class is designed to give you the skills you need to be confident as you work on your musical both during after the class.

During the class, you will focus on building a comprehensive roadmap for your entire musical, including developing your chosen story and mapping out all of the song moments. From there, you will dive into Pasek and Paul’s songwriting process that you will use to write and polish two songs from your musical during the class.

Once you’ve learned the songwriting process, you can apply that to all of the other song moments in the musical. Benj and Justin cover all the major song types in a musical in addition to the ones they write in class, so you’ll have all the skills and information you need to keep writing beyond the 30 days.

In addition to being able to go back and revisit class content, you will also be able to continue posting updates and receive support and feedback from your peers.

Once you enroll, you’ll be placed in a peer group of about 20 other people from around the world. You will all take the class together and start on the same day.

For each of the 30 days, you’ll go to the classroom and see the daily lessons or projects you should complete to stay on track. On some days, the classwork will be watching video lessons. On other days, you’ll be working on songwriting projects or mapping out your musical.

Throughout the class, you’ll share your ongoing work and give and receive peer feedback. Your peers will answer your questions and offer support and guidance every step of the way.

By the end of the class, you’ll write two polished songs and create a roadmap to finish the rest of your musical.
